What Is World News?

World news is a jargon term used by the news media to refer to news items that relate to a global subject rather than a national one. In journalism, the term is usually applied to stories sent from a foreign correspondent (full-time reporter who is stationed abroad) or to articles prepared by a news agency and delivered through wire services, which originally distributed news items using telegraphy but now often use the Internet.

Reporters who work freelance for several different newspapers or broadcasters are called stringers; they often produce world news articles as part of their freelance assignments. World news also includes articles from foreign journalists working for a national newspaper or television channel, and it can include coverage of events that are of interest to the public at large, such as a war in another country. World news may also be included in the coverage of major international conferences, such as summits of multilateral organizations like the United Nations.
